Dozen Cupcakes just make me smile. They make my stomach smile too. I’m really glad a place like Dozen exists because I usually always have an extreme desire for cupcakes. The story behind this bakery is an interesting one. I found out about Dozen when I was working at my first internship ever at a theater organization downtown. One day, a few co-workers were returning to the office around lunch time with miniature cupcakes. They told myself, and my other intern friends, that they were FREE.
Who doesn’t love free baked goods? So we scrambled down the 7 floors of our building and rushed out into the busy sidewalk traffic. Dozen Bake Shop had just set up their digs a mere three shopfronts down from us. So we went in. Got some free mini cupcakes. An addiction was born.
Dozen’s business started suffering within the last year or so. At one point, they want away for good and it was devastating. But some new owners took over the bakery, and now they’re back in business and still as tasty as ever.
Today we had boxed lunches and other treats at work, for our very first intern lunch. Since I’ve been working full-time at my job, I’ve seen a handful of interns come in and out of the office and almost all of them have been my direct responsibility. I got my own start at the company I’m currently at as an intern in the summer of 2010. I remember it being hard to meet the other interns in other departments because I was one of the few who was in 40 hours a week, whereas the rest of my fellow un-paid summer compatriots were in every third Tuesday or something like that.
I only made one or two friends during my internship, so today, we decided to round up all of our interns from their respective departments (editorial, marketing, design) and treat them to lunch so they could get to know each other more, and get to know the company a little better too. My co-worker ordered lunch from Dozen, and we all got sandwiches, chips and our choice of a cupcake or cookie.
Just guess which one I took.
